Red Skelton essays

Red Skelton essays We know him as Freddy the Freeloader, Clem Kaddidlehopper, Cauliflower McPugg and Dead Eye. His career spanned over fifty years and he conquered every entertainment medium from vaudeville to television. He is Red Skelton, whos remarkable skill to evoke emotional responses from laughter to tears from his audiences have marked him as one of the greatest and best loved comedians. In his biography of this great comedian, Arthur Marx captured the many and diverse aspects of Red Skelton. While he was a comedic clown on the outside, like many other comedians, Skeltons home life was anything but funny. Marx illustrates how Skeltons private life was full of tragedy, including the death of his only son from leukemia, the suicide of his wife, and his own near mental collapse. Marx says that through much of his life, Skelton was an unhappy and tormented individual, a sad and lonely man who trusted practically no one and who was as unreachable as a distant star. Skelton was the son of a circus clown was raised in poverty, he quit school at the age of seven and trouped in circuses, carnivals, and vaudeville theaters. Marx points out that his career began in his hometown of nearby Vincennes, Indiana. At age 10, he left his home to travel with a medicine show throughout the Midwest. He joined the vaudeville circus at age 15. Then at the young age of 17, Skelton married Edna Marie Stilwell, who later, even after their divorce, served as his manager and chief writer. Continuing the story of Skeltons career, Marx points out that Skelton made his debut on Broadway and radio in 1937 and on film in 1938 on the show Having Wonderful Time. At that time, known as Richard Skelton, he performed some of his own pieces such as a demonstration of how different people walk up and down stairs. That appearance, Marx says, may have been Skeltons big break. He was signed by MGM in 1940 to serve as comedy re ...

Sally Hemings Children

Sally Hemings' Children When James Thomas Callender published allegations in 1802 alleging that Sally Hemings was not just Thomas Jeffersons slave, but his concubine, it was the beginning but not the end of public speculation on the parentage of Hemings children. Sally Hemings Own Genealogy Sally Hemings  was  a slave owned by Jefferson who came to him through his wife,  Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson. She may have been Martha Jeffersons half-sister, fathered by Marthas father, John Wayles.   Sallys mother, Betsy (or Betty), was herself the daughter of a white ship captain and a black slave woman, so Sally may have had just one black grandparent.   Nevertheless, the laws of the time made Sally, and her children no matter who was the father, also slaves. Birth Dates The birth dates of six children of   Sally Hemings  were recorded by Thomas Jefferson in his letters and records. Descendants of Madison Hemings and Eston Hemings are known. The evidence is mixed for a son who may have been born to Hemings when she returned from Paris. Descendents of Thomas Woodson claims that he was that son. One way to look at the likelihood of Jefferson as the father of the Hemings children is to see whether Jefferson was present at Monticello and whether that is within a reasonable conception window for each child. The following chart summarizes the known  birth dates and the dates of Jeffersons presence at Monticello within that conception window: Name Birth Date Jefferson atMonticello Death Date Harriet October 5, 1795 1794 and 1795 all year December 1797 Beverly April 1, 1798 July 11 - December 5, 1797 probably after 1873 Thenia? aboutDecember 7, 1799 March 8 - December 21, 1799 soon after birth Harriet May 1801 May 29 - November 24, 1800 probably after 1863 Madison January (19?), 1805 April 4 - May 11, 1804 November 28, 1877 Eston May 21, 1808 August 4 - September 30, 1807 January 3, 1856 What Happened to These Children and Their Descendants? Two of Sallys documented children (a first Harriet and a girl possibly named Thenia) died in infancy (plus, possibly, the child named Tom who was born shortly after the return from Paris). Two others―Beverly and Harriet―ran in 1822, were never formally freed, but disappeared into white society. Beverly probably died after 1873, and Harriet after 1863. Their descendants are not known, nor do historians know what names they used after their escape. Jefferson spent minimal effort to track them after their departure, lending credence to the theory that he let them go purposely. Under an 1805 Virginia law, if hed freed them or any slave, that slave would not be able to remain in Virginia. Madison and Eston, the youngest of the children, both born after the 1803 Callendar revelations, were freed in Jeffersons will, and were able to remain in Virginia for some time, as Jefferson had requested a special act of the Virginia legislature to permit them to stay contrary to the 1805 law. Both worked as tradesmen and musicians, and ended up in Ohio. Estons descendents at some point lost their memory of being directly descended from Jefferson and from Sally Hemings, and were unaware of a black heritage. Madisons family includes descendents of three of his daughters. Eston died January 3, 1856 and Madison died November 28, 1877.

Che Guevara Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Che Guevara - Essay Example Revolution is a struggle and plea for freedom. Men such as Che Guevara throughout history have fought as well as triumphed and lost revolutions that shaped our lives now. The battle has been very inhuman and many soldiers shed blood and lost their lives in these battles. War and the revolution have this implication of having to use force and power over those who are weak and oppressed. To describe a specific type of creative production created by human, it is called Art. Che made use of art in order to revolt against the tyranny of the existing administration. Aesthetic value is a characteristic of every artwork. There should be a sense of beauty and pleasantness with the product of the human. Art has several purposes. It can be for human expression, a part of a ritual or to symbolize a feeling or idea. The definition of art can be vague and it cannot be limited by a specific meaning. Human creativity is the main driving force of art. Some people may think that art is just a piece of work that has no significant purpose but to fill our aesthetic needs.

Proposal to add a Day Care Facility at Work Essay

Proposal to add a Day Care Facility at Work - Essay Example Contemporary business leaders require dynamic workers who are capable of meeting the demands of a high-stress and competitive work environment. From a theoretical perspective, these workers would need to be both motivated and free of distraction to avoid performance-related failures. Hence, in many respects, as today’s businesses are often focused on teamwork and team-building philosophies, it becomes the responsibility of the business leaders to invent new and innovative measures to boost employee morale and job satisfaction. Our facility, ABC Industries, a leader in manufacture and sale of technological components for automotive sound systems, maintains a staff of nearly 800, running on two split 12 hour shifts. In this high-stress environment, turnover ratios have been significantly high in recent months due to production demands, putting a significant strain on the human resources budget. Additionally, worker performance on the production floor has been down nearly 25 percent in the same time period due to worker anxiety over personal versus work-related schedule conflicts. Recent communications and anonymous surveys with production workers have indicated a desperate need for a corporate day care facility to assist in the demands of balancing home and work life. Many of ABC’s staff members have suggested that high gasoline prices combined with escalating day care costs have made them financially-motivated to find other employment which might offer a more lucrative salary package. This is something ABC Industries cannot afford. In this difficult economic environment, budgetary guidelines need to constantly be considered. However, the costs to the business in terms of reduced productivity and turnover expenses far exceed the costs associated with managing an in-house day care facility. Budgetary issues will be outlined in greater depth throughout this proposal, however it is appropriate to discuss its

Romeo and Juliet experience disaster Essay Example for Free

Romeo and Juliet experience disaster Essay Romeo and Juliet experience disaster in their lives partially due to inadequate parenting. Examine how well each parent/carer copes with his/her role. Romeo and Juliet were left in a predicament where they felt forced to commit suicide partially due to inadequate parenting from both families and ended up being supported by other caring adults. Romeo and Juliet could not be with each other in an environment full of hatred caused by the feud between the Montague and Capulets. Romeo and Juliets inadequate parenting made them feel unwanted. Adequate parenting is when the parent nurtures, communicates, listens and loves their child. If their natural parents had nurtured and cared for Romeo and Juliet their tragedy would have just led to them just staying with each other. This then led them to ask for guidance from the Friar and the Nurse. The Nurse and Friar tried to do what Romeo and Juliets parents could not do which was to nurture and care for them by giving them comfort and love from their elderly wisdom, this is what gave Romeo and Juliet the hope of freedom. The Nurse is one of the main carers for Juliet as her parents were not able to communicate well with Juliet. The Nurse is the only alternative for Juliet to have comfort from apart from the Friar who she also goes for comfort from. for the gentlewoman is young and therefore, if you should deal double with her, truly it were and ill thing and very weak dealing The support the Nurse was giving to Juliet made her feel that the there is someone there for her to support and look after her in situations where she needs the Nurse the most, by telling Romeo not to chat on her. Throughout the life of Juliet the Nurse was the only person who had shown some affection and love towards her, and was the main person who gave her motherly love, which should have come from the parents. The nurse was the one who was telling all the stories about Juliet as a child that helped them to have a great partnership with each other, For then she could stand high-lone; nay, by throod, She could have run and waddled all about. When Juliet was young the Nurse was telling her stories of when she was able to walk and move about on her own, Juliet was very interested, as she wanted to know what she was like as a youth which gave Juliet the comfort of love from the Nurse. Other signs of close bond between Juliet and the Nurse is the way both of them talk to each other, which is in a far less formal manner compared to the way Juliet talks with her mother. The Nurse is the one who sets up a meeting between Romeo and Juliet even though she knows Romeo is a Montague. This shows her loyalty toward Juliet and knows this will be the right move. But you shall bear the burden soon at night The Nurse has taken the responsibilities of getting Juliet and Romeo together as she knows it is dangerous and could lead to her losing her job but she does this for the happiness of Juliet. As the marriage of Romeo and Juliet got more and more complicated to control the Nurse could not handle the situation and ended up abandoning Juliet when she most needed the support of the wise Nurse, she advices I think it best you marry with the County. As the Nurse could not handle the situation she ended up backing Lady Capulet by suggesting she should marry Paris even though she knew Juliet was married to Romeo. At this point Juliet lost her trust in the Nurse and was left on her own as Romeo was banished. This led Juliet to go to the Friar to get some help, as it was the last hope for her to be with Romeo. Everyone respects Friar Lawrence as he gives careful advice and is the head of the church. He is the main carer for Romeo, as he has no support from his parents and do not understand what he wants. The Friar and Romeo have a great amount of communication between each other as Romeo comes to him when he needs help and the Friar is the only one who could help. For this alliance may so happy prove, to tour your households rancour to pure love. Friar Lawrence understands that Romeo loves Juliet and he will help them to get married as he feels it is right and the love they have is pure and not based on marrying for money. The Friar is the one who marries Romeo and Juliet as he feels their love will survive in the world of violence with the feud of the two families. For by your leaves, you shall not stay alone Till Holy Church incorporate two in one The marriage of Romeo and Juliet was done in secret and only the Friar and the Nurse knew about it. Both Romeo and Juliet trusted the Friar not tell anyone about the marriage. The Friar has given guidance to Romeo since the two of them met with each other. Romeo trusts that his guidance is right and is well meaning, as the Friar is the head of the church, Thy love did read by rote, that could not spell. The Friar gave Romeo advice to help him to survive with Juliet. If they love passionately is it bad for them; Romeo must understand these words of the Friar. When Romeo was left in such a predicament he was forced to go and live in Mantua, Juliet was left on her own as the Nurse betrayed her. The only hope for her was the Friar, Hold daughter, I do spy a kind of hope, Which craves as desperate an execution as that is desperate which would prevent. Juliet had to trust the Friar as it was the last chance for her to survive and she had to put her fate in his hands. She has this trust, as she knows he could help. The Friar had made a plan as a last minute action to keep Romeo and Juliet together as he knows how much they love each other and need each other to survive in this world. The plan consisted of many stages and must be followed exactly and if anything were wrong then would lead to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Hold, get you gone, be strong and prosperous In this resolve; Ill send a friar with speed To Mantua, with my letter to thy lord. The last part of the plan is to get the letter to Romeo telling him all about the plan. The friar had taken a parental role of helping these two lovers to be with each other. Near the end where the plan had to be done perfectly or everything would go wrong, the Friar had ran away after seeing that Romeo had come too early and killed himself and the whole situation was a total disaster. The Friar wanted to protect his reputation and went off, Saint Francis by my speed! How oft tonight have my old feet stumbld at graves! The Friar has realised that the plan was going wrong and when he found out that Romeo had got there earlier he knew the whole thing was over. At first he blamed himself for being slow but he knew Romeo had come too early. He then ran away and left the two in the vault, this situation is similar to what both Romeo and Juliets parents have done from the start by not caring for them. Lord and Lady Montague are not really seen in play, as much so there are not many problems with their parenting. The main failure between Romeo and his parents is the lack of communication, as they do not really communicate with each other as much as they should, Pursud my humour, not pursuing, and gladly shunnd who gladly fled from me from this Lord Montague can see he has no real chance of communication with his son as he does not understand his problem and does not know how to deal with it. This lack of communication has been a downfall in Romeos relationship with his parents. Lord and Lady Montague have love for Romeo and do care for him but the problem with them is that they do not know how to express their love and how to give him advice like normal parents and fell grief after Romeo dies. Grief of my sons exile hath stoppd her breath. After Romeo was dead Lord and Lady Montague were grieving over Romeos death as their only son was dead. This situation was too much for Lady Montague to handle and she died too, this showed how much she really loved her son and how much she did care. This is much like Lady Capulet who also loves her daughter but she does not know how to express this. Lady Capulet shows her love to Juliet when she shows her grief toward her death, O me, O me, my child, my only life! Revive, look up, or I will die with thee. This shows Lady Capulets grief over her only child, she has shown how much she loved her child, as she was the only child she had. Lady Capulet mainly wants Juliet to have money so she does not struggle in life, so she wanted her to marry Paris, as he was wealthy. This is the only thing she wanted for Juliet and not for the love. The gallant, young, and noble gentlemen, The county Paris, at Saint Peters Church,Shall happily make thee there a joyful bride. Lady Capulet has surprised Juliet by telling her about the wedding being so soon Lady Capulet did not realise that Juliet was not ready and she had rushed things forward too quickly. The language she uses with Juliet is formal compared to the way Juliet talks to the Nurse which is not formal, Tell me daughter Juliet, How stands your dispositions to be married? , She has come up to Juliet to talk about the marriage as she did want to know about who she loved but it does not matter to Lady Capulet, as she wanted to marry Juliet to Paris. She did not really interact with her daughter as much as a mother should; this is what keeps them apart and does not give them a good relationship. This makes Juliet feel unwanted and she feels there is no one there for her and ends up going to the Nurse and Friar when she needed help. Lady Capulet relies on Lord Capulet to take care of all the preparation of the wedding and so she does not worry about anything. Like Lady Capulet, Lord Capulet is not a good parent, as he does not have a good relationship with his daughter. He only likes his daughter when she listens to him, and everything is fine but if she were to disobey him then he will get angry and show all his anger in his violence. I tell thee what: get thee to church a Thursday, Or never after look me in the face. Speak not, reply not, do not answer me! He has left her a place where she is forced to marry Paris or she will lose the chance to see her father ever again. This has really made her feel sorrow and she feels like there is no one for her, this gives her the decision of suicide as she has no reason to be alive. As he has forced her to marry Paris, she knows she cannot as she has already married Romeo. Romeo and Juliet were star-crossed lovers and their only fall was fate. Fate is something, which they or nobody can control and led them to their eventual death. When Friar John could not deliver the message fate was the cause of this and the plan ended up going wrong. I believe that the most inadequate parent was Lady Capulet as she did not know how to show her love towards Juliet and did not know what Juliet wanted. She made Juliet feel unwanted and like no one was there for her to be looked out for. The Nurse was the main carer for Juliet and she was the only one who showed her love towards her and used her wisdom to look out for her. As soon as the situation got out of hand then the Nurse betrayed her and left Juliet on her own. Romeos parents were not capable to look after him as they did not know what he wanted, leading him to go to the Friar. The Friar was the only person who cared and wanted to help Romeo. When the plan went wrong the Friar was left on a predicament as Romeo had come to early and he saw both of them dead, as he was afraid of the consequences and decided to run away and left them to lie.

Stuff :: essays research papers

Since its first documented use in 1943, lysergic acid diethylmide, or LSD, has grown to be one of the most potent and controversial drugs in society today. The ways in which LSD produces its effects within the brain is still unknown, and no practical use has been found for it. However, this substance has been described to give incredible insight and revelation to some of those that have taken it, although others have had frightening and nightmarish experiences. LSD is an unpredictable and possibly dangerous substance, but can and has changed the lives of many. A Swiss chemist named Dr. Albert Hoffman first produced lysergic acid diethylmide –or best Known as LSD in 1938 (Dye, p. 2). Hoffman discovered the drug while trying to synthesize a new drug for the treatment of headaches. He obtained the lysergic acid from the parasitic fungus that grows on rye plants known as ergot. From the lysergic acid, he synthesized the compound LSD. He used the compound to test for its pain killing properties on laboratory animals. Being that appeared totally ineffective, the bottle of LSD was placed on a shelf and remained untouched for five years. On April 16, 1943, Dr. Hoffman decided to do further research with the LSD compound (Dye, p. 5). While handling the drug, he accidentally ingested an unknown amount. Then he experienced the world’s first LSD trip. About eight hours later Hoffman drifted back into normal reality and the Psychedelic Revolution was born. Three days later, in an attempt to prove that the previous episode was indeed caused by the ingestion of LSD, Dr. Hoffman ingested what he thought would be a small quantity of LSD, 250 micrograms. In actuality, this is approximately five times the dosage necessary to produce heavy hallucinations in the average adult male (Solomon, p. 34). The drug produced effects that were much more intense than the first time Hoffman took the LSD. He noted that he felt unrest, dizziness, visual disturbances, a tendency to laugh at inappropriate times, and a difficulty in concentration (Dye, p.7). Dr. Hoffman’s condition improved six hours after taking the drug, although visual disturbances and distortion continued. LSD was first shipped to the United States in 1949 (Solomon, p. 54). American scientists tested LSD on animals to learn of its effects. It produced dramatic behavior changes in all animals investigated. During the 1950’s, experimentation of LSD on humans began (Solomon, p.

Origins Of Agriculture In African Sahara Essay

Several decades ago, Harlan et al. (1976) suggested that Africa, outside of the Nile River Valley, might be the most useful setting for developing a fuller understanding of plant domestication and agricultural origins (Harlan et al. , 5). It seems that in Africa the earliest indigenous plant domestication occurred relatively late (ca. 2000 BC) compared to most other regions of the world (Harlan et al, 7-8). Whether this was due to a method of harvesting that was not artificially selective, such as beating versus cutting with stone or iron sickles, a lack of intentional re-sowing of harvested grains, or reliance in some cases on non-domesticable plants remains unknown, but it seems clear that wild grain collection was part of a variety of adaptive strategies until at least about 2000 BC. Unlike the Near East, most of Africa’s native domestic plants appear to have different temporal and geographic origins. In other words, crop domestication in Africa did not arise in a single region, but developed from diverse vegetative zones (Harlan et al, 12). From the critical and historical perspectives, it is important to understand and analyze the development of agricultural patterns in any historio-geographical region, African Sahara in this particular case, because it is from there that the first evidence emerges of village-based communities, pastoralism and intensive use of wild grains. Over the past 75 years, theories of the origins and spread of agriculture have been numerous and diverse. Explanations have ranged from cultural progress, climate change, diffusion of agriculture from single hearths, to population pressure, status enhancement, feasting, and to simply viewing the variety of agricultural approaches around the globe as increasingly extractive adaptations of foraging behavior. Increasingly, however, it appears that multiple factors led to the development of agriculture and that the processes may have been different in each region of the world. Archaeological evidence from centers of independent domestication provides numerous opportunities to explain the process, but from the critical viewpoint, it gives little insight into what might have been the ultimate stimulus for such a broad shift. Today, the Egyptian Western Desert (also known as the Eastern Sahara or the Libyan Desert) is extremely inhospitable with little or no rainfall, high daily temperatures, relentless sandstorms, and life that can be supported only near the occasional well or oasis (Wendorf and Schild, 1984, 1-5). Increased rainfall around 9000 BC led to the formation of seasonal ponds around Bir Kiseiba and Nabta Playa (Wendorf and Schild, 1984, 2). Although the Eastern Sahara remained unpredictable, peoples migrating west from the Nile Valley or from the desert to the south began to temporarily inhabit its better-watered areas (Close and Wendorf, 64). No structures, storage pits, or wells were recovered from the earliest sites, and pottery was rare (Wendorf and Schild, 1984, 5). Grinding stones were present in the oldest levels, and the plant remains suggest reliance on wild grasses (Wendorf and Schild, 1998, 99). Wild animals such as hare and gazelle comprised the majority of faunal remains, and domesticated cattle were possibly included in the subsistence regime (Wendorf and Schild, 1998, 103). By 8000 to 7000 BC, the area around Nabta was scattered with desert lakes and dotted with the trees of Tamarix, Acacia, and probably Ziziphus, swampy plants (sedges), and wild grasses (Close and Wendorf, 68). Occupation of the Western Desert was still likely seasonal, with abandonment during the summer monsoons. The sites were larger than those of the previous period, and the remains of small and large huts, bell-shaped storage pits, and deep wells suggest intensified habitation (Close and Wendorf, 69). Lithics, bone points, grinding stones, and pottery were present (though pottery was still somewhat rare), and the fauna continued to consist mainly of hare, gazelle, and possibly domesticated cattle (Wendorf and Schild 1998, 107). The evidence for domesticated cattle in these earliest levels is debated. Bones, tentatively identified as such, mainly teeth and foot remains, are morphologically similar to both modern domesticated and wild cattle (Bos primigenius f. taurus and B. rimigenius, respectively), but not to other large bovids in the area. Gautier argues for the presence of domesticated cattle rather than wild cattle because the latter probably could not survive on their own in an arid climate without the aid of humans to guide them to known water sources (qtd in Close and Wendorf 1984, 61-62). Support for domesticated cattle comes also from the lack of bones from medium-sized bovids that typically roam with wild cattle (Wendorf and Schild 1998, 108). Cattle bones are present but not common in the assemblages, which is used to argue for cattle-keeping (for milk and blood) rather than for cattle-eating (Close and Wendorf, 66). Interestingly, Close and Wendorf suggest that it was this expansion into the Sahara that might have pushed cattle-herders towards cattle-keeping and not slaughter, as during the same time in the Nile Valley, cattle apparently were being killed for consumption and not maintained for their products (Close and Wendorf, 68). In addition to hunting, and cattle milk and blood, the collection of wild plants also provided food. The best studied plant remains come from the site of E-75-6 at Nabta Playa, dating to around 6000 BC (Wasylikowa, 128). Wendorf and Schild interpret the sites of Nabta Playa as representing an important transition in prehistory, that of incipient domestication (Wendorf and Schild, 1998, 105). The intensive use of wild grains by pastoralist-hunters suggests a broad-spectrum approach to subsistence, but one that also incorporates semi-sedentism and delayed use of resources. Although the pastoralists at Nabta Playa apparently revisited the same locations on a seasonal basis, they probably were forced to remain mobile due to their reliance on cattle and the need for abundant grass cover. Archeologists and historians suggest that groups migrating from the west introduced domesticated African grains to the upper Middle Niger Delta (MND) is has been supported by material remains through various archeological sites (McIntosh, 56). For instance, ceramics and bone harpoon-type points with affinities to sites in the Mema and Dhar Tichitt suggest that there was some early interaction or occupation at Dia by fisher-forager and agro-pastoralist groups from these more western areas. Evidence from Dhar Tichitt suggests that domesticated millet was introduced prior to 1900 BC, and that millet farming and herding existed well before 600 BC (McIntosh, 71). Ceramics from Mema sites indicate that indigenous fisher-foragers first inhabited the Mema area, but by 1300-800 BC, pastoralist immigration into the region had begun. It has been proposed by Mcintosh that these groups of herders and fishers might have assimilated to some degree in the Mema, and then perhaps fissioned into proto-Bozo and Nono groups upon entering the modern MND sometime between 800 and 400 BC (McIntosh, 79). Movement into the deeper channels of the upper MND was likely one response to increasing desiccation of the ancient floodplain margins and encroachment of the Sahara during the early first millennium BC. The human-plant relationship at MND appears from the earliest times to be based on rice farming and collection of wild plant resources. This trend continues throughout the occupation of the sites, even during periods of seasonal habitation or partial abandonment (Horizons II and III of Dia). Early in the second millennium however, several species (pearl millet, bread wheat, and cotton) occur that suggest the development of new or intensified relationships between Dia and the outside world. The increased presence of pearl millet noted especially on Mara probably signals enhanced trade or exchange with other communities, or perhaps the movement of new peoples into the area. Mcintosh writes of oscillating drying trends during this time that might have allowed cultivation of pearl millet in areas previously too wet, perhaps at Dia or at outlying hamlets (Mcintosh, 83). This important cereal was likely domesticated somewhere between the Sahara and the Sahel of West Africa. The earliest evidence of domesticated pearl millet comes from Tichitt, dating 1900-1500 BC, and from Birimi in northern Ghana, where two grains were directly dated to 1740 BC and 1130-1250 BC (McIntosh, 93). Pearl millet occurs frequently at later sites and is a common and important cereal across much of West Africa. The four bread wheat grains found on both Shoma and Mara, one grain directly radiocarbon dated to AD 779-1157, may also signal trade, or more likely, visitors from abroad. Native to west Asia and introduced into North Africa by way of Egypt, these wheat grains probably made their way to MND via one of the major Saharan trade towns such as Sijilmasa, where to according to medieval Arabic travelers and traders, wheat was cultivated (McIntosh, 99-100). In sum, it increasingly appears that there was an independent domestication of cattle in the eastern Sahara around 8000 BC, well before the introduction of cattle, goat, and sheep from the Near East around 5000 BC. Practicing a broad-spectrum approach to food getting, these early herders spread west and south across the Sahara, eventually entering West Africa around 2000 BC. The earliest domesticated grass (pearl millet) occurs around this time in a broad band across the southern Sahara and Sahel beginning earliest at Dhar Tichitt (Mauritania) and moving rapidly eastward to Lake Chad (northeastern Nigeria) by about 1200 BC (Wendorf and Schild, 1998, 122). These sites are invariably associated with the remains of domesticated cattle, suggesting that Saharan pastoralists introduced domesticated grasses into sub-Saharan Africa and played a pivotal role in the development of other African regions.

media singapore essays

media singapore essays Singapore. Even saying the word and some of the uninformed may still hold the belief that it is located "somewhere in China," knowing only where it is approximately. Yet this vibrant, newly industrialized city-state is in fact located close to the equator and is often overlooked on the world map; not surprising, considering it is only represented by a small dot in the South China Sea. Today, the island of Singapore has earned high acclaim for its rapid transformation from a humble trading post to the modern, technological metropolis that it has proudly become. Singapore has been described by some economists as a "modest miracle," simply because it has managed to achieve the status of an Asian business headquarters with its only resource: people. (Marshall, 1970) Despite its lacking of other resources, due to its strategic location at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore is a thriving business hub for Southeast Asia with an excellent communications network infrastructure. It possesses all the trappings of a successful business center with an extremely multicultural heritage, as well as an abundance of colorful and modern environment. History on this island began around the 15th century, when it became a port of call for various Malay empires ruling at the time. It was most likely favorable to them for its perfect deep-water harbor area; it is one of the worlds largest at roughly 93 square miles, and offers six gateways to the open seas. What the early settlers probably didnt care about was its rich, hilly landscape and fertile tropical forestry. The coastal region of Singapore is very smooth and rocky, easily accessible for all types of boats. However, the early history wasnt documented as much for its accu...

Organizational Vision and Visionary Organizations Essay

Organizational Vision and Visionary Organizations - Essay Example Therefore it is true to state that vision is strategic, has a long term and lasting effect, remains there in a lengthy notion and must not change in tactical moves and directions that are adopted by the business organizations every now and then. Planning can help a particular company gain so much in accordance with its goals and objectives that had been planned and drafted but in the current times more and more attention and emphasis is making the rounds of the discussion as to whether these plans can actually deliver what was expected of them in the first place. A visionary organization would look to set its objectives in a manner which would be strategically placed and the aims within the working domains would center on relieving the short term gains for the long term benefits. A visionary organization looks at plugging the gaps that are present amongst the different departments of the business organization so that the eventual results in the form of different processes, activities and undertakings on the part of the organization are distinctive from that of its competitors and unique in its own righteous way. A visionary organization would aim to reach the top in the specified period of time since it has to be answerable to its own people, the stakeholders and more than anything else, it has to maintain its credibility of being a true player within the industry. A visionary organization takes care of the upper tier, the middle management (also known as the knowledge management) as well as the lower levels within the organization and thus sets a vision which works to the best effect of one and all within the business organization. It takes input from the stakeholders who have invested their resources in the form of time and money towards the betterment of the business organization in the first place.
